Privacy Policy
This privacy policy explains how Second Chapter Book Swap (“we”, “us”) collects, uses and protects your personal data when you use https://secondchapterbookswap.com. We comply with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, to the extent it applies, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
1. Who is responsible
The data controller is:
Nadia Egli
Churerstrasse 83, 8808 Pfäffikon, Switzerland
Email: privacy@secondchapterbookswap.com
2. What data we collect and why
Account & profile data
When you sign up we store your email address, name and (optionally) your profile picture, city, short bio, and your favourite books, authors and genres. We use this to create and operate your account and to display your profile to other readers.
Book listings
Books you add to your shelf — title, author, ISBN, cover image, condition, language, genres, your optional spice rating and your personal note — are stored and shown to other users so they can discover and request swaps.
Activity data
When you swipe, follow another reader, send messages within a match, or post in the community, that activity is stored so the feature works. Messages are visible to the other party in a match. Community posts are visible to all signed-in users.
Technical data
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page visits. This is a cookie-free analytics product that does not track individual users across sessions or sites and does not store personal identifiers in your browser. Standard server logs (IP address, request time, user agent) are kept for a short period to detect abuse and debug issues.
3. Legal basis for processing
- Performance of contract — to provide the core features you signed up for (your account, book listings, matches, messaging).
- Legitimate interests — to keep the service running, prevent abuse, and understand aggregate traffic patterns via cookie-free analytics.
- Consent — for optional features such as marketing emails (when you actively subscribe).
- Legal obligation — where we have to keep records to comply with Swiss or EU law.
4. Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. We share the minimum necessary with these processors so the service can run:
- Supabase Inc. — database and authentication (hosted in the EU region). Privacy policy.
- Vercel Inc. — website hosting and cookie-free analytics. Privacy policy.
- Google Books / Open Library — used to fetch public book metadata and cover images when you search. Only your search query is sent; no account data is shared.
- Stripe Inc. — payment processing (only used if and when paid memberships are active on your account). Privacy policy.
- Resend — sending transactional emails such as the welcome message (only used when this feature is active). Privacy policy.
- Infomaniak Network SA — Swiss provider for the domain and email forwarding. Privacy policy.
5. Where your data is stored
Account and content data is stored on Supabase’s EU region infrastructure. Some processors (e.g. Vercel, Stripe) are based in the United States and rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards for international transfers under FADP and GDPR.
6. How long we keep your data
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, book listings, messages and community posts are deleted within 30 days, except where we are required to retain records (for example, payment receipts) by law. Anonymised, aggregated analytics data may be kept longer.
7. Your rights
Under Swiss FADP and EU GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Have inaccurate data corrected
- Have your data deleted (subject to legal retention obligations)
- Receive a copy of your data in a portable format
- Object to or restrict certain processing
- Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@secondchapterbookswap.com. We respond within 30 days. You may also lodge a complaint with the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) in Switzerland, or with your local data protection authority if you are in the EU.
8. Cookies and browser storage
We use essential cookies only — specifically the session cookie required to keep you signed in. We do not use marketing or cross-site tracking cookies, which is why no cookie banner is shown.
9. Children
Second Chapter Book Swap is intended for users aged 16 and over. If you are under 16 you may not create an account. If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child under 16 we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the site or by email. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
